Hidden in the forests of Hakone, the POLA Museum of Art features the extensive private art collection of former POLA cosmetics company owner, Suzuki Tsuneshi. Acting on the companies principle to contribute to the prosperity and advancement of society through work in health and beauty, the POLA museum was opened in September 2002 as a blend of Hakone's natural beauty and the beauty of arts. To reach the right balance between Hakone's scenic charms and the museum's art, most of the museum is built underground to harmonize with nature. The museum blends the use of natural light and positioning to enhance the viewing experience of each artwork.
Displaying the private collection of Tsuneshi Suzuki, the museum includes oil paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass-work, and cosmetic tools, with a focus on Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Picasso, Chagall, and other 19th and 20th century artists. There are rotating exhibits drawn from the permanent collection, providing tourists and travelers a new experience with each visit. Some famous pieces include Birthday by Leonard Fujita, Kimono with Iris Pattern by Saburosuke Okada, Water-lily Pond by Claude Monet, and Mother and Child by the Sea by Pablo Picasso.
With the goal to blend nature and art, the museum opened the Pola Museum of Art Nature Trail
in 2013. This 670 meter outdoor path offers a lush landscape through the scenic Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Tourists and travelers can enjoy stroll through this relaxing path as wild birds and small animals appear in the charming scenery. The 30~40 minute hike is perfect to enjoy the nature and scenery of the quite forest.
The museum grounds also house a restaurant, cafe, and museum shop. The restaurant Array
offers immaculate mountain views of Hakone through large windows. The outdoor terrace is also a popular spot to enjoy authentic European cuisine during a clear day. The TUNE CAFÉ
is a great option to enjoy sweets or a light meal in the natural landscape of Hakone. Blending the natural scenery of Japan with an impressive collection of masterpieces, the POLA Museum is a must while traveling through Hakone.
