When it comes to pizza in Japan, you might be in for a surprise. Take a look at the pizza menus from popular pizza delivery chains and you will see quite a few surprising things.
First off, the size. As with most foods in Japan, the sizes are considerably smaller when compared to the U.S and pizza is no exception. The large pizza in Japan probably comes close to a medium in the U.S. And not surprisingly, that is the largest size they offer, the other being a medium.
Next, the price. The pizza in Japan is considerably more expensive. An average medium pizza easily costs over 2,000 yen and the large can cost up to almost 4,000 yen. That's approximately $40 on a pizza the size of a medium here in the U.S (compared to the $15 large pizzas available in the U.S).
Finally, the choices. The pizza toppings in Japan may sound delightful to you, or scare you. Most places do have the more common options like Margherita and Italian Basil. But most other choices include ingredients unique to Japanese pizza such as snow crab with avocado or teriyaki chicken with mayonnaise and corn. Perhaps the high cost of the pizzas are due to the ingredients and toppings of the pizza.
