Eating while Standing

Tachigui restaurants are establishments that serve food to be eaten while standing. They literally mean eating while standing and is a style of eating that has been in Japan since the 1600's. Tachigui meals began with Soba, when people would come to a soba cart, eat the noodles served on the spot, and be on their way. This method of eating is popular among businessmen and other workers with a limited lunch period, because it allows for an incredibly fast turn around time. You can also see tachigui soba places in crowded cities near the train stations. The food is quickly slurped by a customer waiting for there train, and makes for a quick and easy meal for the person on the go. While tachigui began with Soba and Sushi, there are many tachigui restaurants now, including ramen, yakiniku, takoyaki, steak houses, and even foreign dishes like Italian meals.
